Angus Gilmour
From working in London as a bespoke picture framer, I developed a love for original art and in particular oil paintings of landscapes. I took up a paintbrush, trying different mediums and found a talent for painting in oils.
This is the first exhibition of my work. I am self taught. I make my own paint
Watercolours
Watercolours are a particularly difficult paint medium as it is almost impossible to correct mistakes. Pigments used are transparent and in the creation of lovely works, there may be many washes to achieve the effect that an artist intends.
Hereford Art Week
During Hereford Art Week, I will be working on a number of paintings so you can see how works gradually come to life. Most will start with a basic underpainting with a sketched background and as these will be at different stages, so will need different techniques.
With oil painting, work done in a single sitting is known as alla prima. I prefer to work in a traditional way with the experimentation in using paint I have made myself from raw pigments, and the application of a series of glazes. The layered technique has rather fallen out of fashion but is especially useful in creating depth whether in still life, pastoral scenes or portraiture.
The advantage of allowing layers to dry and following the "rules" that include "thick over thin" , "fat over lean" and "small over large" is to correct inevitable errors.
